The process of how he met fans is documented in the film "Searching for Sugarman" (2012)
His albums also enjoyed late success in Australia in the late 1970s. Sugarman even held concerts in Australia in 1979.
It is estimated that his albums sold over several hundred thousand copies in South Africa. However, Sugarman himself hardly received any copyright income because they were mostly pirate copies.
Sugarman continued to live in Detroit, engaging in activities such as building demolition and waste cleaning. He even ran for public office in local elections and primarily wanted to do social work.
It is said that he shared his earnings with his family and friends.
He passed away on August 8, 2023.
