🏕 Isolated: Evolution’s Different Answers

In my previous story, Death Valley Is Alive,
I followed a desert transformed by a flower bloom
—and watched pupfish surviving in water
where life seems almost impossible.

That experience stayed with me.
It made me wonder: when a population
becomes separated from the wider world,
what kinds of lives can evolution create?

This year, I was lucky enough to photograph
all three kinds of places featured in this story.

An Indonesian island ruled by Komodo dragons.
A hidden lake in Palau filled with golden jellyfish.
And the desert waters of Death Valley, home to pupfish.

Their worlds are radically different
—but each was shaped by isolation.

First: the Komodo dragon.

It is the largest living lizard on Earth,
but it is not the product of one isolated island.
Komodo dragons survive across
a small group of Indonesian islands,
where the sea separates their populations
from the rest of the world.

Here, isolation did not produce a delicate specialist.
It helped preserve a giant predator.

This is one of the Komodo dragons
I photographed this year.

The ocean around these islands
is more than scenery.
It is a boundary
—a barrier that limits movement, separates
populations, and narrows the dragon’s
entire world to a handful of islands.

On these islands, the dragon became a flexible apex
predator: an ambush hunter, a scavenger, and
an animal built to survive long gaps between large meals.

Its heavy body, tearing teeth, chemical sensing, and
venom-assisted bite are not simply signs of “strength.”
They are a precise answer to an island food web with
large prey and few competing predators.

The Komodo dragon’s answer to isolation is domination.

In this place, survival meant becoming large enough, patient
enough, and adaptable enough to rule the top of the food
web.

My second encounter was in Palau, at Jellyfish Lake.

This is not an ordinary lake. It is a marine lake:
saltwater enclosed inside an island, connected
to the surrounding sea
only indirectly through limestone.

A population of jellyfish became isolated here
—and inherited a much quieter world.

This is one of the golden jellyfish I photographed this
year.

In the open ocean, jellyfish live among many predators and
competitors. But inside this sheltered lake, the conditions
changed.

The jellyfish did not need to become stronger in the way a
Komodo dragon did. They evolved toward a different strategy.

Golden jellyfish carry symbiotic algae in their tissues.

Each day, they move through the lake following sunlight,
helping their microscopic partners photosynthesize. In
return, the algae provide energy and nutrients.

Their stings are usually too mild for people to notice—not
because they are “weak,” but because heavy defenses
are less valuable in their protected lake.

The golden jellyfish’s answer to isolation is cooperation.

Instead of ruling their environment with powerful defenses,
they follow the sun—and survive through partnership with
algae.

The third story is the most extreme.

The Devils Hole pupfish lives in a geothermal, water-filled
fissure in the Mojave Desert near Death Valley.

This species is confined to one known natural site
—and its breeding habitat is extraordinarily small.

When ancient desert waters disappeared, one lineage
remained in a crack in the Earth.

A quick note about these images:
this is not a Devils Hole pupfish.

This is a pupfish I photographed at Salt Creek in Death
Valley. Filming inside Devils Hole is not allowed, so I am
using my Salt Creek pupfish photos to help tell
the story of their close desert relatives.

The Devils Hole pupfish itself lives in water that is warm,
low in oxygen, and painfully limited in space and food.

The Devils Hole pupfish did not evolve a kingdom.
It did not evolve a sheltered lake filled with sunlight.

It evolved the ability to endure.

In a tiny, hot, oxygen-poor refuge, even a small
change in water level, food, or temperature
can threaten the entire species.
The shallow shelf near the cave entrance is
critical for feeding and spawning.

The Devils Hole pupfish’s answer to isolation is endurance.

Its survival is a reminder that evolution can produce
extraordinary adaptation—but also extraordinary fragility.

The Komodo dragon survived by becoming
a dominant island predator.

The golden jellyfish survived by
turning sunlight and symbiosis into an advantage.

The Devils Hole pupfish survived by
enduring conditions
that exclude almost every other fish.

Isolation does not make life simply stronger or weaker.

It removes some challenges, creates others, and gives
evolution a different set of problems to solve.

In one place, strength is a powerful bite. In another,
it is a partnership with sunlight. In another, it is simply
surviving where almost nothing else can.

These animals are not extraordinary
in spite of their homes.

They are extraordinary because of them.

Their islands, lake, and desert refuge did not
just form the background of their lives.
Those places shaped what each species became.

Their isolation made them unique.

It also made them vulnerable.

To lose one island, one lake, or one desert spring
would not only mean losing habitat.

It could mean losing a one-of-a-kind answer
that life discovered over time.
