Two identical containers. 
Same freezer. 
Same amount of water.

Which freezes first: 
hot water or cold water?

Easy! Cold water, of course!

Obviously, cold water wins!

...except when it doesn’t.

Under certain conditions, 
a hotter sample can begin
freezing or freeze sooner.

This strange possibility is called the Mpemba Effect.

But wait—this is not a magic trick.

Scientists still debate exactly
when it happens... and which
mechanism matters most!

Evaporation

Dissolved gases

Supercooling

Hot water starts with more heat to lose.

Actually forming ice is another.

Freezes first’ is not always the same as ‘cools fastest.’

Four possible troublemakers
